Program Information:

Engineering Technology is a growing field that involves a combination of math, science, design and communications skills to create and repair various devices and structures. An associate degree in Engineering Technology provides a versatile foundation from which students can pursue a variety of careers.

Warm sunshine, coastal breeze, and ocean all around. Such conditions make the Florida Keys a great place to visit, but at Florida Keys Community College, students are inspired to do much more than sunbathe on the beach. The College is using the powerful natural resources in its own backyard—sun, water, and winds—to generate green energy, wean the planet from its fossil fuel dependency, and train students for new, cutting-edge technology jobs.   

Supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, FKCC’s NEW Associate in Science degree in Engineering Technology features a unique specialization in Renewable Energy that focuses career training in solar, wind, and ocean power technologies. The new program supports the nation’s pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and double the renewable energy workforce by 2025.

The AS: Engineering Technology- Renewable Energy Technician is comprised of 15 credit hours of general education courses, 18 credit hours of core subject course, and 25 credits of specialization credits—totaling 60 credits. Coursework covers, but is not limited to the following topics:

Program Description:

The Engineering Technology (ET) Associate in Science (A.S.) degree program at Chipola College (CC), prepares students for employment or provides additional training for persons employed in manufacturing and high technology industries. The 18 credit hour technical core of this degree is closely aligned with the national Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) Certified Production Technician (CPT) industry certification, and endorsed by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). Students who have already earned the MSSC-CPT will receive 15 articulated credit hours towards the Engineering Technology degree. The Engineering Technology Associate in Science degree program is fully transferable to four year degree granting institutions.

Engineering Technology Labs at CC:

The Engineering Technology lab at Chipola College contains all new, state-of-the-art equipment and training systems from companies including Rockwell Automation, Siemens, National Instruments, Fanuc, and Amatrol. Labs included in the program include electronics, mechanical drives, rigging, PLCs, motor control, AC drives, control panel wiring, process control, hydraulics, pneumatics, vibration analysis, data acquisition, and mechatronics. Students are taught the basics of each topic and then expand into troubleshooting, system design, and programming in both ladder logic and LabVIEW languages. Portable tablet computers and eLearning are utilized to enable students to easily port their skills from the classroom to the lab.

Program Description:

The Engineering Technology AS degree at Broward College offers a planned sequence of instruction tailored specifically for 3 specializations:  Electronics, Alternative Energy, and Biomedical Systems.  Broward College’s ET Degree supports a broad range of high tech manufacturing and high tech industry sectors including precision machinery for aviation and transportation sectors, food and beverage production, electronics and avionics and others. The 18 credit hour technical core is aligned with the Manufacturing Skills Standard Council’s (MSSC) skills standards.  After completing this core students will be prepared to take the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC) assessments for the Certified Production Technician (CPT) certification and 15 credits of the ET Core can be articulated for a current MSSC –CPT credential.

Engineering Technology Labs at BC:

The Advanced Manufacturing Lab at Broward College is located on the Coconut Creek (North) Campus.

The lab is home to hands-on trainers for mechanical drives, hydraulics, pneumatics, motors and controllers, AC/DC power, and electronics. Separate facilities are dedicated to training for alternative energy (solar energy) courses and programmable logic controllers.

Alternative Energy Systems

Program Description

The purpose of this track is to prepare students to meet industry-specific educational needs for technicians in new and emerging alternative and renewable energy fields, including, but not limited to, occupational titles such as Electrical Engineering Technician, Industrial Engineering Technician, Solar Photovoltaic Installer and Solar Power Plant Technician, Solar Thermal Installer and Technician, Energy Auditor, and Smart Grid Technician. This program also provides supplemental training of persons previously or currently employed in occupations related to energy production and storage, manufacturing and construction.

Advanced Manufacturing

Program Description

This track specializes in automation, robotics, and process control with emphasis on computer-controlled systems for industrial manufacturing, system integration, instrumentation, simulation, and animatronics. The program skills used for careers in manufacturing, theme park industries, military applications, water filtration and purification plants, and much more. Graduates are prepared to work as controls engineers, systems integrators, robotic technicians, industrial programmers, process control engineers, field service technicians, simulation technicians, industrial sales engineers, and industrial maintenance technicians.
